Neala’s Flatcoats – Switzerland

Although I did not have dogs of my own as a child, I grew up in the countryside and had the daily companionship of many dogs from nearby farms. Given that animals were my passion from a young age, it was inevitable that I became a veterinarian.
When in 1984, I finally had enough time and money to buy my own dog, I chose a Flatcoated Retriever, whose name was Cedor v Felsbach. Cedor was not the most typical Flatcoat, but he did enjoy some success in the show ring. What Cedor did have was the very typical Flatcoat character we all love – playing, swimming, stealing food as often as possible, and being naughty now and then. He infected us with the incurable flatcoat virus. Two years later Danja v. Felsbach joined our family as our foundation bitch. Danja was very typical and carried excellent English bloodlines.
In 1988 our first Neala’s litter was born, from which we kept a bitch – Neala’s Fireflame, who also became a champion. Since then, Parson Russell Terriers have joined the kennel, but we have never been big breeders with a lot of litters. We only breed when we have the time to raise the puppies properly. We have enjoyed showing our dogs in Switzerland and abroad, which allowed us to meet many other Flatcoated Retriever enthusiasts. We have also greatly benefited from the advice and mentorship of other longtime, experienced breeders both in breeding decisions and in the showring.
I also developed an interest in judging and have been approved to judge all retriever breeds since 2001. Over the years, I have been approved by the Swiss Kennel Club to judge FCI groups 8, 9, 7 and most recently in 2022, group 3. I am honoured to be on the A1 judges list of the Flatcoated Retriever Society in the UK and able to award CCs. I have judged in many European countries and it is my great pleasure and honour to be invited to judge the Flatcoated Retriever Society of Canada 50th Anniversary Specialty. I am very much looking forward to coming to Canada.

Blacktoft Flatcoats – UK

I have had dogs since the age of twelve, my first being a Labrador which I trained for the shooting field as this was my main interest. My first flatcoat came along in 1996 as I had always admired the breed and the time was right to get one. She was a working dog, but also my first venture into the show ring. Onwards and upwards from then, I have owned and bred several champions, I am passionate about maintaining the dual purpose nature of the breed, and am lucky enough to run a shoot alongside my partner, so all of my dogs work as well as show. I have won and been placed in Any Variety and Flatcoat Working tests. I have been on the committee of the Northern England Flatcoated Retriever Association for almost twenty years and I am also on the Flatcoated Retriever Society Show Sub committee, the FCRS Rescue and Rehoming committee and last, but not least the Dukeries Gundog Field Trial committee, which gives me plenty to do! I started judging in 2001, and gave my first set of CC’s in 2017 and since then have judged the Flatcoated Retriever Club of Scotland and NEFRA’s Championship Shows. I have also judged in Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and Germany. I currently own 4 flatcoats, 2 of which are full champions, and one just a youngster about to embark on his show/working life. I am very much looking forward to meeting and judging your dogs.

Obedience and Rally

Cheryl Bishop

I began dog training in 1983 when I became interested in having a great
family pet. It was not long afterwards that my focus also took me to
obedience competitions. Over the years, I have competed in both Canada
and the U.S. obtaining obedience and rally titles on my dogs. I have also enjoyed competing in both agility and fly ball.

My family consists of my adorable Golden Retriever “Cheddar” who is always so happy and full of life. He brings a smile to my face every day. The youngest one is a Shetland Sheepdog name “Nacho” who is adorable, fun to play with and loves to snuggle.

I want to express my appreciation to the club for inviting me to be part of their judging panel.  Good luck to everyone.

Stephen Payton

My name is Stephen Payton and I am 59 years old. I am happily married to Myrtle Payton who gives me all the encouragement and love to train and run my dogs in hunt test and field trials. I started training dogs back in 1995 for HRC test then moved into CKC events also . Over the years I have trained many dogs to titles of HRCH, JH , SH, MH , and Grand Master Hunter. I got to love this sport and now training and trialing is one of my biggest hobbies.

I always said that when I got the time to commit to judging I would judge. So in 2021 I retired and started judging and I am having blast with meeting so many people and dogs. I find it such an honour to be asked to judge for a club that it is a privilege to be out having such fun. I feel everyone should try their hand at judging to see both sides of the events.

Scent Detection

Laurie Mclaughlin

I am honoured to be judging the 50th Anniversary Scent Detection Trials for the Flat Coated Retriever Society of Canada.  My career with dogs began in 1982 when I was an assistant obedience trainer for 15 years. 1996 I opened my own boarding kennel and training center in Brigden near Sarnia. I went to full time trainer in 2015. My facility Canine Companion Training Academy began hosting events in 2016.

I earned my UKC Nosework Judging license in 2017. AKC Scent Detection  later that same year and CKC Scent Detection Judging license soon followed. In 2024 I became the CKC Scent Detection Representative for Zone 6.

Over the years I have put over 300 various titles on my own personal dogs. Plus titled and trained my 3 Belgian Shepherds – Thunder, Ryland and Trip to highest Scent Detection levels in multiple organizations. My newest scent dog it almost 1 year old and has already started to follow in the bros footsteps. Scentwork has brought out my true passions through teaching, training and judging. I love all aspects of it!

More to come!!
